Jesselton College held its Creative Leadership Camp (CLC) 2015 at Beringgis Beach Resort, Papar, Sabah. Over 30 students from the Business, Tourism and Art schools participated in this year’s CLC with the theme “Building Leadership and Team Building Skillsâ€. An exciting trip awaited the students, with planned activities lasting until late evening.
This year, the camp is privileged to have the presence of Dr. Elaine Kong as the lead trainer and facilitator, who briefed and guided the participants throughout the event. At the location, the participants were divided into six teams and were immediately assigned their first task which is to decide on their team name and motto.
Highlights of CLC 2015 include outdoor activities such as the Amazing Race. Students were assigned with various tasks such as being blindfolded while negotiating a maze to rescue a Princess and a Prince. The task required good teamwork and creative manoeuvring skills in order to succeed. To the surprise of many, the task included having to touch a live frog which caused loud screams from girls and guys alike that could be heard far across the resort. Besides that, enthusiastic participation was also shown as members of a team ran straight into the sea, shoes and all just to complete a task.
Throughout the camp, the participants were not short of energy as they were constantly replenished with food up to 6 times a day! Supper time was also a good time for fellowship among the students and staff as well as to relax from the packed schedule.
Besides good teamwork, the students were also competitive and determined. Having to present frogs to the facilitators as “ransom†money, a team spent the night searching for frogs to be captured. Moreover, the students also showed tremendous courage and determination as they were required to devour live wriggly sago worms. With continuous encouragement from her team members, a participant managed to complete the gruesome task with tears running down her cheeks. In addition, the students also displayed a fun attitude, enjoying their time together while accomplishing all their tasks and activities.
On the final day, the culmination of team efforts was the pitch presentation required to persuade a panel of investors to invest in their company. The teams came up with many interesting ideas and creative products. The 3 successful teams won funding, when they showcased their respective products of Flexible Cloth Shoes, Wireless Powerbank and a Community Recycle campaign.
To end the most memorable CLC camp by far (as summarised by the students), every participant were required to hand out ‘love letters’ to two person of their choosing. It was a way to show their appreciation, admiration as well as encouragement to one another. All who participated, including the trainer and facilitators were definitely thrilled to be part of CLC 2015.
