School D’Art was invited to an art event, this time taking place at the Centre for Art & Design, Tanjung Lipat
On the second week of August 2015, School D’Art was once again invited to an art event, this time taking place at the Centre for Art & Design, Tanjung Lipat. The event is packed with activities such as art markets, workshops and talks by well-known artist/designer from the creative industry. The organizer, The Art Factory, was honoured to able to invite one of Sabah’s most prominent Graphic Designers, Mr. Teo Zye Kuen as the guest speaker. During the 2 hours session, Mr. Teo shared his invaluable life lessons, experience and knowledge as a Graphic Designer.
According to Mr. Teo, the link between local culture, business and graphic design industry started very low and very weak e.g. RM300 for a logo design. Hence, his life in the beginning as an illustrator up until becoming a successful Graphic Designer was a very hard, yet fruitful one. However, Mr. Teo said that he was also one of the lucky few who get to further his studies overseas and gained different perspective as well as inspiration from his lecturers.
From setting up “Generator Creative Studio” with his wife Ms. April Tsen, a typographer to forming “Asgardian School of Arts” with Mr. Ethan Lo, Mr. Teo acknowledged that the journey of Graphic Design is still a very tough one. Therefore, together with Mr. Noah, the owner of “Durian Cheese†design studio, they formed the Visual Communication Association (VCA).
Visual Communication Association is a design association in Sabah with the objective to raise the standards of graphic design and visual communication, professional practice and professional status of graphic design practitioner. They encourage and promote positive change in visual quality for Sabah’s creative industry through cooperation, communication and interaction between members, and with professionals, organisations, the government, industry, commerce and society. They also assist in the education of graphic design students by holding talks and workshops in the art and science of visual communication design. VCA aims to be a Design Hub for the BIMP-EAGA region in the coming future.
Through the sharing sessions, students of Jesselton College were able to obtain good insights and will hopefully be able to use them as motivations in their own journey of being an artist/designer.
