Jesselton College Visits Balai Seni Lukis
On the 5th of December 2014, Jesselton College was invited to join an Art Reach Program organized by PETRONAS. The event was held at the Balai Seni Lukis Sabah, Penampang from 8:30am until 5:00pm. Led by the Head of Graphic Design, Ms. Michelle Chan, students of Jesselton College participated in the event as part of their assignment.
PETRONAS gallery is about the appreciation of visual art in Sabah through the sharing of knowledge, skills and experiences with the local society. During the event, various activities were planned such as art knowledge workshop, demonstrations, meet the artist as well as interdisciplinary art sessions.
Visitors to the event managed to watch live demonstrations of local artists, performing grayscale illustrations on canvases as well as catch a glimpse of caricature drawings. Besides that, many Sabah indigenous crafts such as basketry, necklaces and bracelets were also on display in booths. Aside from being for sale, students also get to learn more regarding local handicrafts.
At the end of the day, students also explored both the PETRONAS gallery and the Balai Seni Lukis. The students were all smiles as they observed and looked for inspiration from the work and illustrations by local artists. All of them were able to experience and capture the skills, techniques and materials used by local artists.
The event was meaningful and brought many new insights to the students. Hopefully, more of such events will take place next year.
