SDG 1: No Poverty

Bottom Financial Quantile Admission Target

We are committed to creating equal opportunities for students from all socioeconomic backgrounds. As part of our mission to promote accessibility and inclusivity, we have set a targeted admission goal to enroll students from the bottom 20% of household income, identified as B1 and B2 categories with household income below RM3169.

What does ‘Bottom 20%’ mean?
When we refer to the ‘bottom 20%’, we are specifically targeting students whose household income falls within the B1 and B2 categories. These categories encompass individuals and families with a household income below RM3169. By focusing our efforts on this group, we aim to address the unique challenges and barriers faced by students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

Supporting Students from the Bottom 20%:
We understand that students from the bottom 20% often face financial constraints that can hinder their access to higher education. We are dedicated to supporting and empowering these students through a range of initiatives designed to remove financial barriers and ensure their success.

We offer the following for students:

  • Financial Aid and Scholarships:
  • Mentorship Programs:
  • Academic Support Services

We are dedicated to providing equal opportunities and empowering students from all walks of life to achieve their dreams and make a difference in the world. We invite students from the bottom 20% to explore the range of academic programs, extracurricular activities, and supportive networks available at JUC. Together, we can create a brighter future for all students, regardless of their financial circumstances.

Bottom Financial Quintile Student Success

We are dedicated to fostering student success and ensuring that all students, regardless of their financial circumstances, have the support they need to thrive academically and graduate successfully. As part of our commitment to inclusivity and accessibility, we have set a target of 85% for studies graduation and completion specifically for students from the bottom 20% of the household income group, or a more precisely defined target within this category, in the country.

We understand that students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds may face unique challenges during their academic journey. Therefore, we have implemented a comprehensive range of support services, resources, and programs to specifically assist and empower our students in the bottom financial quintile.

Our dedicated team of academic advisors, mentors, and student support staff work closely with these students, providing personalized guidance and assistance to ensure they have the tools and resources necessary to overcome any barriers they may encounter. We offer academic support programs, workshops, and tutoring services to help students excel in their coursework and stay on track towards graduation.

Additionally, we provide free English classes to every student at Jesselton University College (JUC) to improve their English skills. Since many of our students may struggle with English, this initiative is designed to help them learn and improve so they can better understand their coursework and perform well in their exams. Our goal is to ensure our students are capable of communicating effectively in English, enabling them to be competitive even on an international level.

Financial constraints should never be a barrier to educational attainment. To that end, we offer various financial aid options, scholarships, and grants specifically tailored to meet the needs of students from the bottom 20% of the household income group. We understand the importance of easing the financial burden for these students and strive to provide the necessary resources to help them navigate their educational journey with confidence.
