Starting from 2024, Jesselton University College (JUC) introduced a dedicated training programme titled “SDG Principles in Practice”, specifically developed to raise awareness and action on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across all sectors of society. This course is a structured, stand-alone, non-degree training module offered under JUC’s HRDC training portfolio, publicly accessible and certified.
The course provides a comprehensive overview of all 17 SDGs and equips participants with the knowledge and tools to apply sustainability thinking to their workplaces, communities, and personal lives. It is designed for a wide audience including working professionals, youth leaders, educators, civil society members, and community changemakers. By making the course open to both students and non-students, JUC extends the reach of SDG education beyond campus boundaries.
Key topics include:
- Introduction to the SDGs and the 2030 Agenda
- Why SDGs matter in Malaysia and Sabah
- Deep dives into key goals like SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 17 (Partnerships)
- Case studies, group SDG mapping activities, and action planning workshops
The training is intentionally hands-on and localised, incorporating real case studies from Sabah and JUC’s own institutional practices. Participants are guided to reflect on poverty, education inequality, environmental issues, and gender inclusion, and then align those issues with relevant SDG targets.
This initiative is important because awareness alone is not enough. Meaningful progress on the SDGs requires building capacity at every level of society. Through this course, JUC empowers individuals to become sustainability advocates who can design and implement community-based solutions aligned with global goals.
The program is publicly promoted via JUC’s website and social media, fully documented, and aligned with the Malaysian government’s emphasis on integrating Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) across lifelong learning and workforce training. It demonstrates JUC’s commitment to advancing SDG literacy and contributing to sustainable, inclusive development in Malaysia.
