Jesselton University College Conducts “Effective Communication in Hospitality” Training for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs)

KOTA KINABALU, February 13, 2025 – Jesselton University College (JUC), in collaboration with the NGO Sabah Cheshire Home and with the support of the Ministry of Community Development and People’s Well-being (KPMKR), successfully conducted a four-day specialised training programme titled “Effective Communication in Hospitality” from February 10 to 13, 2025. The programme was designed exclusively for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) who aspire to build meaningful careers in the hospitality sector.

This initiative reflects JUC’s deep institutional commitment to inclusive education, accessible skills training, and workforce integration, especially for marginalised and underrepresented groups. It contributes directly to multiple United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 4 Quality Education, SDG 5 Gender Equality, SDG 8 Decent Work and Economic Growth, and SDG 10 Reduced Inequalities by removing communication-related barriers and promoting inclusive economic participation.

Over the course of four days, participants engaged in interactive workshops, role-playing exercises, and hands-on learning activities tailored to their specific needs. The training covered verbal and non-verbal communication techniques, active listening skills, handling guest inquiries and complaints, and adapting service interactions to diverse customer needs. Emphasis was placed on accessibility in hospitality, ensuring that PWDs are well-prepared to work in hotels, restaurants, tourism centers, and other service-related industries.

One of the key aspects of the training was building confidence in workplace interactions, where participants learned how to navigate guest engagement, teamwork, and professional etiquette while addressing barriers that may arise due to their disabilities. Trainers also provided guidance on using assistive communication tools and technology to enhance accessibility in hospitality settings.

Participants expressed appreciation for the training, highlighting its practical approach and real-world application. Many acknowledged that the program gave them the skills and confidence to pursue career opportunities in hospitality, reinforcing their ability to communicate effectively with guests, colleagues, and employers.
