Jesselton University College Drives Multilevel Policy Engagement to End Poverty

Kota Kinabalu, 20 June 2025 – JUC continues to demonstrate its institutional commitment to poverty reduction through strategic participation in policy-making and development dialogues across local, regional, national, and global platforms. In alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 1: No Poverty, SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 5: Gender Equality, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals).

One example of this commitment is JUC’s memorandum of understanding with Sabah Cheshire Home, signed in the presence of the Sabah Ministry of Community Development and People’s Well-being (KPKMR). This partnership enables the co-development of inclusive support strategies for persons with disabilities and disadvantaged groups, including training, mentoring, and community outreach.

Regionally, JUC played a key role as a collaborator in the Sabah Blue Economy SkillFest Forum, organised by HRD Corp (Human Resource Development Corporation) with support from the Sabah State Government. The forum explored poverty reduction through upskilling and sustainable economic development for coastal and island communities in Sabah. JUC contributed by sharing expertise and co-designing content for technical training and workforce readiness, positioning the institution as a significant contributor to regional economic inclusion.

On the national stage, JUC President Prof. Dr Chin Yuk Fong provided expert input to the book “Way Forward for Private Higher Education Institutions: Education as an Industry (2020–2025)”, developed for the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia. The publication outlines systemic strategies for institutional sustainability and equitable access to higher education for low-income and underrepresented groups. JUC’s contribution strengthened policy discussions and helped shape future directions for Malaysia’s higher education ecosystem.

Internationally, JUC entered into a memorandum of understanding with Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), Indonesia, during the AppliedHE Xchange in Bali 2025. This collaboration fosters joint research, academic exchange, and social impact programmes aimed at reducing educational disparities and strengthening access to international learning opportunities for disadvantaged students.

JUC’s multilevel engagement reflects its strong commitment to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and supports the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) development plan by ensuring inclusive education, social equity, and capacity building.
