The lecture halls of Jesselton University College (JUC) resonated with the echoes of change and sustainability as The Sabah Society, a non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting environmental conservation and community development in Sabah, Malaysia, graced our campus with an enlightening talk.
With sustainability at the core of the global agenda, the event was an essential step for JUC in ensuring that its students are well-informed and actively engaged in contributing to a sustainable future. The session aimed to introduce students to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the crucial role that The Sabah Society plays in achieving these goals.
Dr. Elaine Kong, a prominent member of The Sabah Society, took the stage to share her knowledge and passion for environmental sustainability. Dr. Kong’s presentation covered various aspects of sustainability, from environmental conservation and wildlife protection to community development and social well-being. She highlighted how the SDGs serve as a universal call to action, mobilizing efforts to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all.
As Dr. Kong elaborated on the goals and the importance of local involvement, students were inspired to contemplate their role as future leaders and change-makers. The interactive session encouraged questions, discussions, and brainstorming on how they, too, could contribute to these global initiatives.
The talk also emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts between educational institutions like JUC and organizations like The Sabah Society. Such partnerships provide students with opportunities for experiential learning, community outreach, and volunteer work, enabling them to contribute actively to the SDGs.
The impact of this enlightening session extended beyond the lecture hall. Students expressed their eagerness to engage in projects and initiatives that align with the SDGs, with many already planning to collaborate with The Sabah Society on upcoming initiatives.
Jesselton University College is immensely grateful to The Sabah Society for their valuable time and knowledge-sharing. The event served as a reminder that through collective effort and unwavering commitment, we can create a sustainable and prosperous future for all. Jesselton University College is proud to be part of this journey, nurturing responsible citizens and future leaders who are ready to make a difference in the world.
