Empowering Every Student, Uplifting Every Woman – Breaking the Cycle of Poverty Through Equal Access to Education

Jesselton University College (JUC) remains committed to advancing inclusive education and ensuring that no student is left behind due to gender or socioeconomic barriers. In alignment with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 1 (No Poverty), 4 (Quality Education) and 5 (Gender Equality), JUC implements long-term institutional support schemes to promote equitable access to higher education, particularly among women and students from low-income and bottom 20 percent household backgrounds.

Since 2022, JUC has implemented comprehensive student support schemes that remain operational to the present day. These initiatives include mentoring, scholarships, financial assistance, free transportation, accommodation, counselling and other student welfare provisions. Together, these services aim to reduce financial, academic and practical barriers that may prevent women, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, from accessing, participating in and completing higher education. This initiative is long term and expected to continue until further notice.

While these provisions are available to all eligible students regardless of gender, JUC places particular emphasis on supporting women’s access to higher education, especially among female applicants and students from low-income, rural and disadvantaged backgrounds, through mentoring, scholarship opportunities and additional student support services.

JUC provides partial to full tuition scholarships to eligible students from B40 (bottom 40 percent) and bottom 20 percent income households, with particular attention to ensuring equal access for female applicants. These scholarships help reduce the financial burden of higher education and support women who may otherwise face difficulties pursuing university qualifications.

Through its mentoring and counselling programmes, female students benefit from free academic mentoring, academic and career guidance, counselling services and English language improvement classes. These provisions help women strengthen their academic confidence, improve their learning capabilities, overcome educational challenges and prepare for future employment and professional development.

To address transportation barriers, JUC provides free daily shuttle bus services from student hostels to campus, supporting students from low-income households, particularly women from rural areas, in attending classes safely and reliably. This initiative helps reduce transportation expenses and supports consistent participation in academic activities.

JUC also provides up to 24 months of free hostel accommodation for eligible students from underprivileged families. By reducing accommodation and living expenses, this provision supports students who may otherwise experience financial difficulties maintaining their enrolment. For female students from disadvantaged backgrounds, access to accommodation assistance can help reduce practical barriers to continuing their education.

Beyond financial and accommodation assistance, JUC provides additional student welfare services, including free dental check-ups, health initiatives and continuous monitoring of students’ academic performance and well-being through dedicated student affairs units. These services contribute to a supportive educational environment where female students can receive assistance throughout their academic journey.

All these institutional support schemes have been implemented since 2022 and continue to be available to eligible students. JUC recognises that improving women’s access to higher education requires more than admission opportunities. Continued academic, financial and welfare support is equally important in enabling women to remain enrolled, progress academically and successfully complete their studies.

These support systems are non-discriminatory, openly accessible to all qualified students, and publicly documented, ensuring transparency and accountability. While the provisions are available regardless of gender, JUC places particular emphasis on ensuring that women, especially those from low-income and disadvantaged households, can benefit from these opportunities. All services are designed to foster equitable access and enable high completion rates across gender and income categories, with a target graduation rate of 85 percent and above.

Through its continued implementation of mentoring, scholarships and other student support provisions, JUC strengthens women’s access to higher education while promoting academic participation, student retention and educational progression. These initiatives reflect the University’s commitment to removing socioeconomic barriers and empowering women through education.enable high completion rates across gender and income categories, with a target graduation rate of 85 percent and above.
