Jesselton University College’s Non-Discrimination Policy to Advance Gender Equality in Higher Education

Jesselton University College (JUC) continues to uphold its commitment to gender equality, inclusivity and equal opportunities through the implementation of its institutional Non-Discrimination Policy, which formally came into effect in January 2024. The policy establishes JUC’s commitment to preventing discrimination against women and ensuring that female students, academic staff and employees are treated fairly and equitably throughout their educational and professional experiences at the University.

The policy forms part of JUC’s institutional efforts to create an inclusive learning and working environment where individuals are respected regardless of gender, age, religion, ethnicity, disability or socioeconomic background. In particular, it reinforces the University’s responsibility to eliminate gender-based discrimination and promote equal opportunities for women in admissions, academic participation, employment, professional development and institutional activities.

Through this policy, JUC is committed to ensuring that women have equal access to educational opportunities, academic resources, scholarships, student support services and university facilities. Female applicants and students are entitled to fair and transparent treatment throughout the admissions process, while enrolled students are encouraged to participate fully in academic programmes, extracurricular activities, leadership opportunities and institutional initiatives without discrimination.

The policy also extends to JUC’s employment practices, supporting fair treatment of female academic and administrative staff in recruitment, professional development, career advancement and participation in institutional decision-making. JUC recognises the importance of maintaining a working environment where women are respected, supported and provided with opportunities to contribute to the University’s academic and organisational development.

In addition to promoting equal opportunities, JUC’s Non-Discrimination Policy reinforces the University’s commitment to preventing gender-based prejudice, exclusion and unfair treatment. The policy provides an institutional framework for promoting respectful interactions among students and employees, while encouraging a university culture that values diversity, dignity and mutual respect.

JUC also recognises that achieving gender equality requires continuous institutional attention and accountability. Through its existing administrative and student support structures, the University seeks to promote awareness of non-discrimination principles, encourage fair treatment and support the identification of areas requiring improvement. These efforts contribute to maintaining an educational environment where women can pursue their academic and professional aspirations without facing discriminatory barriers.

Importantly, JUC’s Non-Discrimination Policy formally took effect in January 2024 and remains valid for a period of three (3) years, covering 2024 to 2026. This provision ensures that the policy remains applicable throughout the University’s ongoing institutional operations, including the 2025 reporting period. The continued validity of the policy demonstrates that JUC’s commitment to preventing discrimination against women is an established institutional responsibility rather than a temporary initiative.

In accordance with the policy’s Review and Validity provision, JUC has scheduled a formal policy review in 2027 to evaluate its effectiveness, relevance and alignment with updated institutional objectives and national or international gender equality standards. The review will provide an opportunity to assess the policy’s continued suitability and identify potential improvements to strengthen gender equality and inclusive practices across the University.

The policy further allows for earlier reviews where necessary, particularly in response to new legislation or significant institutional developments. This provision supports JUC’s ability to respond to changing regulatory requirements and institutional circumstances while maintaining its commitment to non-discrimination and equal opportunities.

By maintaining an institution-wide Non-Discrimination Policy with a clearly defined implementation date, validity period and review mechanism, JUC demonstrates its continuing commitment to protecting women’s rights and promoting gender equality in higher education. The policy provides an institutional foundation for ensuring that female students and employees have opportunities to participate, develop and succeed within the University.

JUC remains committed to fostering an inclusive academic community where women are treated with dignity, fairness and respect. Through the continued implementation of its Non-Discrimination Policy, the University supports Sustainable Development Goal 5 (Gender Equality) and Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education) by promoting equal opportunities, preventing discrimination against women and strengthening inclusive participation in higher education.
