Jesselton University College Strengthens Gender Equality Through Systematic Monitoring of Women’s Applications and Admissions

Jesselton University College (JUC) continues to strengthen its commitment to gender equality in higher education through the systematic measurement and tracking of women’s application, acceptance and entry rates. This institutional monitoring process supports JUC’s efforts to promote inclusive educational opportunities and ensure that women’s access to higher education is consistently monitored and evaluated.

In alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG 5): Gender Equality, JUC maintains gender-disaggregated admissions records to assess women’s participation across its academic programmes. The collected information provides a basis for monitoring admission trends, evaluating female participation and supporting evidence-based institutional planning.

During the 2025 reporting year, JUC recorded 181 applications from women, of which 161 were accepted, representing an acceptance rate of approximately 89.0%. This represents an improvement of approximately 4.6 percentage points compared with the 84.4% female acceptance rate recorded in 2024. The year-on-year increase reflects a higher proportion of female applicants receiving admission offers and provides a measurable indicator of women’s access to higher education at JUC.

While the total number of female applications decreased from 231 in 2024 to 181 in 2025, the institution recorded a higher acceptance rate, increasing from 84.4% to approximately 89.0%. This comparison demonstrates the importance of systematically monitoring both application volumes and acceptance outcomes to obtain a more comprehensive understanding of women’s participation in the admissions process.

Among the 161 female applicants accepted in 2025, 144 were admitted into degree programmes, while the remaining 17 were admitted into postgraduate programmes. By monitoring admissions across different academic levels, JUC can assess women’s access to both undergraduate and postgraduate education and identify participation trends that may inform future institutional planning.

To ensure consistent and reliable monitoring, JUC implements systematic tracking measures through its institutional admissions monitoring process. These measures include maintaining a gender-disaggregated admissions database, preparing annual women’s application and acceptance statistics, monitoring female admissions across degree and postgraduate programmes, and conducting periodic reviews of admissions trends. This structured approach enables the institution to systematically measure women’s application rates and acceptance or entry rates while maintaining accurate institutional records.

The Registrar’s Office oversees the collection, maintenance and monitoring of admissions information, including applications received, admission outcomes and student enrolment records. Through the gender-disaggregated admissions database, JUC records the number of applications submitted by women, the number of female applicants accepted and their distribution across academic programmes. This information enables the institution to calculate acceptance rates, monitor participation patterns and maintain consistent reporting across different admission periods.

As part of its institutional monitoring practices, JUC prepares annual women’s application and acceptance statistics to evaluate female participation in higher education. The comparison between 2024 and 2025 demonstrates how annual monitoring enables the institution to identify changes in application patterns and acceptance rates. By maintaining historical admissions records, JUC can evaluate year-on-year developments and support evidence-based institutional planning.

JUC also monitors women’s admissions separately across degree and postgraduate programmes to better understand participation at different academic levels. This programme-level tracking provides additional information on women’s educational pathways and enables the institution to identify potential differences in admissions patterns. The findings support institutional planning and the continued development of inclusive educational opportunities.

In addition to maintaining admissions records, JUC conducts periodic reviews of women’s application and acceptance trends as part of its institutional monitoring process. The Registrar’s Office reviews the collected information to identify participation patterns and potential disparities in access to higher education. These findings contribute to institutional reporting and provide relevant information for discussions concerning student recruitment, educational accessibility and admissions practices.

The systematic collection and review of gender-disaggregated admissions information also support JUC’s institutional decision-making. By examining women’s application and acceptance rates, the institution can evaluate participation trends and identify areas where additional attention may be required. The findings may inform recruitment strategies, student support initiatives and institutional measures intended to strengthen women’s access to higher education.

JUC recognises that promoting gender equality requires more than maintaining inclusive admissions policies. The systematic measurement and tracking of women’s applications, acceptance outcomes and entry rates provide measurable information that supports institutional transparency, accountability and evidence-based planning. Through consistent monitoring and reporting, JUC seeks to ensure that women’s participation remains an important consideration in its institutional development.

Jesselton University College remains committed to advancing gender equality by promoting women’s access to higher education and strengthening its institutional admissions monitoring practices. The continued collection, analysis and review of admissions information enable the institution to monitor female participation across academic programmes and support the ongoing evaluation of educational opportunities.

These efforts contribute to SDG 5: Gender Equality, reflecting JUC’s commitment to inclusive educational access, systematic institutional monitoring and evidence-based decision-making. Through its gender-disaggregated admissions database, annual admissions reporting, programme-level monitoring and periodic institutional reviews, JUC continues to strengthen its approach to measuring women’s application, acceptance and entry rates while supporting equal educational opportunities for women.
