JUC Integrates Sustainable Development Goals into Academic Curriculum Through Compulsory MPU 2422 Community Service Course

Jesselton University College (JUC) continues to strengthen its commitment to sustainability education by integrating the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into its formal academic curriculum through MPU 2422 Community Service, a compulsory academic subject that all undergraduate students are required to complete as part of their programme requirements. This curriculum-based initiative ensures that sustainability education, social responsibility and community engagement form an integral part of students’ academic learning experiences.

As part of the academic requirements for MPU 2422 Community Service, every student must plan, organise and implement at least one community service project during the semester in which they enrol in the subject. Each project must be directly related to and contribute towards at least one of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Students are required to identify relevant community or environmental issues and translate their academic knowledge into practical activities that address societal needs. This approach ensures that SDG-related learning extends beyond classroom discussions and becomes a compulsory component of students’ academic development.

Over the years, JUC students have participated in various community service initiatives, including beach cleaning, gotong-royong activities, donation drives, environmental conservation and community outreach programmes. These activities address different sustainability priorities, including poverty reduction (SDG 1), health and well-being (SDG 3), sustainable communities (SDG 11), responsible consumption (SDG 12), marine conservation (SDG 14) and terrestrial ecosystem protection (SDG 15). Through these initiatives, students gain practical experience in project planning, teamwork, leadership, problem-solving and community engagement while contributing to sustainable development.

By embedding MPU 2422 Community Service as a compulsory subject within its undergraduate academic curriculum, JUC demonstrates an institutional commitment to providing structured and meaningful sustainability education. Unlike optional extracurricular activities, the course establishes a formal academic requirement for students to engage with the SDGs through practical community service during their studies. This approach supports SDG 4 (Quality Education), particularly Target 4.7, which promotes education for sustainable development, while contributing to SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through community engagement and collaborative initiatives. JUC remains committed to developing socially responsible graduates who possess both academic knowledge and practical experience in addressing sustainable development challenges.
